Or: a Crash Course for the Curious

Geisha

Still practicing Hiragana, transcribing one song a night to keep myself nimble at it. I'm debating on whether I should wait to get a textbook befrore I start learning Katakana. In the meantime, I'm broadening my vocabulary from online sources. Finally wrestled the "R" sounds into submission, thanks to a helpful hint from [profile] taytheer . (Thank you, thankyou, thankyou!)   It requires doing this little flippy thing with your tongue against the top of your mouth, like you're saying "R" and "L" at the same time. Aside from that, a really big key to good Japanese pronounciation is saying the vowels right.

"a" is always "ah"
"i" is always "ee"
"e" is always "eh"
"u" is always "oo"
"o" is always "oh"

Ah, also, "g" sounds are always hard, and "j" sounds are always soft.
