Fortune Favours the Bold
May. 23rd, 2007 11:31 pmThe short version: HA!!!!!!!!
Extended Cut: I get back from my breif and blissful stay with Aurey (update on that momentarily), and find that the computer is no longer in its place in the corner. Sheela, my boss' wife (in one of her psychotic fits, apparently) says upon questioning that Bob "got rid of it." Now, show of hands, how many people interpret that as: "it's no longer in our posession, not here anymore, and will not return"...? I asked if they were planning on getting a different one, and she said no and quite mockingly suggested that I buy a new one....
So, given that this is the only means I have of communicating with Aurey with any consistency (particularly since the computer at mom's apparently got fried while I was away), and they know it, and I've bent over backwards for their sake on a lot of things and not to mention that I haven't given them any good reason to take the computer away, and there are a lot of jobs closer to Mom's that probably pay better and definitely don't cost half the gas to get to, I told her I quit.
Just as I was getting into the car, she comes out and has me talk to Bob on her cell phone. He pleads with me to stay, and claims that it was just out for repairs and would be back within a couple of days. After working with these people over the years, I know they aren't the most honest, so I wasn't sure whether to believe him, and I'm still not sure whether Sheela was just trying to be cruel or what. Either way, I agreed to stay for a while and see if the computer reappeared. Needless to say, as I'm typing right now, the computer is back--quickly enough that I doubt it was ever out for repairs atall--and, by Sheela's behavior this morning, I'm betting she got a good yelling at for trying to screw with me, and they both know better than to mess with my being able to communicate with the man I love.
So, on to more pleasant things.
It was a lovely trip. Friday we walked around LaGrange for a while, and stopped at a nice little Thai place on the way from the train station to Aurey's place, also had a look at one of the local thrift stores where I snagged a copy of The Scarlet Letter for 30 cents, and a couple bits of jewelry that I intend on disassembling and using for my own creative purposes. Saturday, we took the Metra into the city proper and had lunch at the Artist's Cafe (Greek food and good iced coffee) then went to look around the Field Museum for a bit. After it closed, we walked by the lake for a while and then crossed into Grant Park and ate ice cream cones on a bench by Buckingham Fountain. From there we walked back to the train station, stopping to make a couple of small impulse buys from a store selling oriental things (from incense to painted scrolls to silk robes). We ended the day a bit foot-sore and tired, but happy. Sunday we stayed in, watched movies and did artistic things with sharpies. Monday, after rolling around abed for a while, we got up and Aurey whipped up a delicious omelette with the somewhat unlikely combination of leftover Thai and leftover gyros. Then on the way to the train station we stopped at the book store and I picked up the second latest Merry Gentry novel (finished it in two days) and am now halfway through Invisible Monsters, which is a very good read so far.
And now, on to catching up on what all of you have been up to!
