I get to be a somnambulist today
Apr. 5th, 2007 04:27 pmSo.. Had to get up at 1 today and come into work for a few hours, on this, my supposed day off... Needless to say, I've been saying "Bloody Hell" quite frequently. On the upside--as usual when I have to come in at ungodly (for me) hours--Sheela, the boss' wife, fed me lunch. Indian food is a nice perk. I had what she called "red soup" which was quite spicey and actually a sort of orange colour. It came with these rather crumbly white cakes that were sort of like a cross between rice and bread (bland on their own, but good with the soup). While eating, I drowsily watched the last half of Pride and Prejudice on HBO. Pretty movie; makes the romantic in me wibble. Who doesn't like a story like that now and then? All the little things that make you think: "Ooh, they'll never get together... Wait! Wait! Maybe...Say something, dammit!.... *sigh* ^_^...." Twists and tensions, a little bit of angst, heartfelt declarations, challenges overcome. Clichets, sure, but if they're done right... ;-P
Well, enough bleary-eyed musings, must read...
Getting though The Handmaid's Tale, and it's rather disturbing, as I can actually picture something like that happening, here. *shivers* It's well-told, though, and I'm getting more into it than I did 1984 and Brave New World (both good reads, though). I think it's becoming my favourite dystopian story. I like the metaphore of the "wings" showing how narrow Offred's world has become...
