My Life According to Rob Brezsny
Nov. 12th, 2008 02:10 amPISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Describing his writing class at Sarah Lawrence College, Jeffrey McDaniel says: "There are two kinds of humor: ha-ha humor that is light and airy and floats into the sky like a balloon, vanishing as the giggling subsides; and then there is a darker, heavier humor that is still there when the laughter stops, a humor that must be reckoned with, a humor with teeth." I suggest, Pisces, that you make the latter your specialty, your passion, and your medicine. Consort with belly laughs and sublime guffaws that rouse the ferocity you need in order to penetrate deeper into the heart of the Great Mystery.
Interesting coincidence: today, I stopped by a little shop called Granny Bea's. It's in a very small town on a little-used highway between Columbus and Seymour, and it has the best selection of used DVDs (and cds, games and videos) that I've ever seen in any one place. I permitted myself to spend $20 and got four: The Audition, The Eye (the original one), Ginger Snaps 2, and The Saddest Music in the World. This last one, I had never seen before, aside from previews. It's a very odd movie--surreal and stylized--and definitely of that second kind of humour. I think I like it, but it's such a departure from just about anything I've seen in a long time that I'm not sure. I'm going to have to watch it a couple more times to be sure I get the joke...
