Spontaneous Play
Apr. 29th, 2007 06:04 pmDad and I went out to the China Garden today. It's a little place in a little strip mall, but, since the Tokyo closed, it's the best place for Asian cuisine in town. It's also the only place that delivers, as it proudly states in a neon sign you see when you first pull up--"We Delivery". We ordered our food, got our sodas, and had just settled into our table to wait when an adorable little girl in a pink dress came out from the kitchen and, in spite of the fact that she only knew a little English, and we didn't know any of her language at all, decided that we would be her playmates for the duration of our meal. We played a whistling game where we had to match her notes exactly. She then proudly spelled out the words on Dad's t-shirt, tickled his underarms, ran her hands over his beard stubble, laughed at my red and black striped tights, and taught me how to sit properly. When our food came out, she began the serious process of trying to teach us the real names for our food, and a few phrases which may or may not have translated to something along the lines of: "These stupid Americans have the brains of parrots." ;-P She was very dutiful about helping us squeeze hot mustard onto our eggrolls, and throwing away the packets and used napkins, and at one point tried to feed my rice to me. :-|
Dad was a little annoyed by it all after a while, but he did try to be a good sport about it. All in all, I just decided to have fun with it. She was just a kid, after all, and you don't often get an opportunity learn from other cultures. Besides that, when we got our fortune cookies, mine said: "Cooperate with the one who has know-how and integrity."
