Dad, the step-mom, and my little sister (I adore that kid!) came back from their excursion up to Michigan to visit my uncle. (He and his wife and step-daughter moved up there because said step-daughter was accepted into Interlochen. I understand it's an honor. ^_^)
They brought souvenires. A cute little stuffed dragon with floppy limbs, a pair of tiny wooden shoes, and a smoothe black stone. If I hold it close to my face, I can smell the sunscreen that was on her hands when she picked it from Lake Michigan. (She has very fair skin, like me, so she has to wear lots of it.)
I couldn't get off of work to go this year (Grand Prix, always busy) but hopefully I'll be able to next year. I content myself with the knowledge that I will be going up to Chicago at the end of October. My cousin Martha wants to get together as many family members as would like to go for an all girl trip. (I haven't been to Chicago since the summer I went to Europe. My aunt and uncle took me up there with them for a Monet exhibit.)
I'm looking forward to it. I think if I ever had the money I wouldn't stop traveling. Just follow my trickle of gypsy blood wherever it wants to go... :-)
I baught the Criterion copy of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas the other day (also baught the a copy of the Phantom of the Opera--always loved that story).
In among the bits of writing that can be found in it's case, I found this quote, which I think pretty well expresses the state of things just now:
"In a nation ruled by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile--and the rest of us are fucked until we can pull our acts together: Not necessarily to Win, but mainly to keep from Losing Completely. We owe that to ourselves and our crippled self-image as something better than a nation of panicked sheep... but we owe it especially to our children, who will have to live with our loss and all its long-term consequences. I don't want my son asking me, in 1984, why his friends are calling me a 'Good German.'"
--Hunter S. Thompson
Mind you I've no interest in spawning, myself, but I quite agree with the sentiment...
